An order confirmation proves that the purchase reached a specific store milestone. It does not automatically prove that the customer qualified for a reward or that a card was issued. The rebate paragraph should acknowledge the completed purchase and explain the next relevant update without competing with the receipt itself.
The most useful copy is short because the email already contains order details. The work lies in choosing the correct state, naming the next milestone and giving the customer a recognizable channel for the follow-up.
Say what the completed purchase establishes
Begin with the purchase fact the message can support. If the order is associated with an active offer, say that it will be assessed under the relevant conditions. Do not write “Your card is ready” merely because the product was advertised with a reward.
In a hypothetical campaign, an order confirmation is sent immediately after purchase, while eligibility depends on additional approved conditions. The paragraph can connect the order to the offer without making the later decision prematurely:
This order is associated with our current reward offer. We will assess the eligible purchase details under the offer terms and send the next reward update through the contact route stated in those terms. This receipt confirms your order; it is not a card-access message.
The example’s operational promise must match the actual approved process before use. If the merchant cannot commit to a particular update channel or review step, the copy should not invent it. A shorter factual statement is better than an unsupported reassuring one.
Shopify provides notification-template customization tools, with details and variables depending on the template and setup. Confirm the available surface before implementation. Shopify’s notification customization guidance is the technical starting point; this article focuses on what the paragraph should communicate.
Explain the next reward update and channel
Name the next milestone the recipient can recognize: an eligibility outcome, a claim invitation or another approved update. Avoid a vague promise that “something exciting is coming.” The customer should know what message to look for and why it relates to the order.
Use different paragraphs for different known states. Do not reuse the pending version after an actual decision is available or the approved version when the system cannot establish the status.
| Information state | Fictional paragraph | Editorial boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase associated with offer; review pending | “Your order is associated with the reward offer linked below. Eligibility will be assessed under those terms. Look for the next reward update through the stated program channel.” | Connects purchase to review without declaring approval |
| Approved outcome genuinely available | “The reward outcome for this order is approved as described in the separate program notice. Follow that notice for the next recipient step and applicable card terms.” | Use only when approval is actually confirmed |
| Reward information unavailable at send time | “We cannot confirm reward information in this receipt. Review the offer details that applied to your purchase and use the stated support route if you need clarification.” | Does not turn unknown information into ineligibility |
The approved variant still does not say a card is issued unless that separate fact is confirmed and belongs in the message. Keep the milestone language exact. A support team should be able to point to the paragraph later and explain what it did and did not establish.
A difficult case is a customer who changes the order shortly after the confirmation is sent. The email is a record of the information available at its send time. It should not promise that every later order change leaves the reward unchanged. Link to the applicable offer details and ensure later program messages explain confirmed changes through the approved process.
If the store uses multiple notification languages or storefronts, keep the same milestone meaning in each version. A translated sentence should not turn “will be reviewed” into “has been approved.” The translation QA guide owns the full language-equivalence process.
Link the applicable offer details without duplicating the receipt
Use a descriptive link such as “Reward offer terms for this purchase” rather than a generic “Click here.” The destination should be the correct public or approved recipient explanation, not a generic merchant-sales page or an unrelated current campaign.
Avoid restating the entire order table inside the rebate paragraph. The receipt already contains products, amounts and delivery information. Reference the order context and focus the additional paragraph on the reward’s next step. Repetition can introduce inconsistent amounts if one part updates and another does not.
Before release, review a sample notification for each supported state using fictional or approved test records. Confirm the paragraph appears in the intended location, the link resolves to the right terms and unsupported variables do not produce empty or misleading text. The review should test the actual message, not only a copy document.
Read the receipt as a customer who has never heard of the provider. Can they tell that the order is complete, the reward has its own conditions and another instruction may follow? Can they identify the official help route without assuming the receipt contains card access? These are the communication outcomes to verify.
The final deliverable is a small set of approved paragraphs mapped to confirmed information states. Each version adds one useful explanation to the receipt: what the purchase establishes and what reward update comes next. That keeps the order confirmation accurate without asking it to perform every job in the recipient journey.
Plan the reward explanation that accompanies your Shopify purchase confirmation.
